I come from England, but I’ve lived in Japan since 1978. In England I studied foreigh languages, especially German, and also language education. But after coming to Japan I changed to English education. When I was a student I tried to combine my studies with a wider learning about the world. I went to Germany in the summer vacations to do part-time jobs. One time on a vegetable farm, another time in a carpet factory. After working for a month, I would use the money for a trip around Switzerland or Italy. I also made new friends this way. So studying, working, travelling and making friends all became parts of the same experience. I think it’s important for young peple to combine their life activities like this. It’s important for older people, too. But when we get older we usually forget to!
